Just four months after winning his second U.S. Open title, Payne Stewart was killed when the Learjet in which he was flying suddenly depressurized and subsequently crashed. The following year at the major tournament at which he enjoyed the most career success, his fellow players paid tribute to the popular golfer. Not only did several golfers wear Stewart's trademark knickers, but a group also gathered the Wednesday before the tournament started to participate in a ceremony much like a 21-gun salute. Twenty-one balls were teed up along the 18th fairway, and the golfers hit them into the Pacific Ocean at Pebble Beach. Another group then took their shots into the water.
