Payne Stewart had suffered a disappointing loss the previous year in the U.S. Open, and he was determined not to let a win slip away from him again in 1999. He and Phil Mickelson battled for first throughout the back nine, but Stewart pulled out the heroics at the end to clinch his second U.S. Open title. First, Stewart's tee shot on 17 trickled to within five feet of the flag. His birdie on that hole gave him the lead. Then, he saved par with a 16-foot putt on 18 to secure his championship. Emotional after the win, he said "All I wanted to do was give myself a chance. I never gave up. I got the job done."
