After a bogey 5 on the 72nd hole, Lou Graham relinquished sole possession of the 1975 U.S. Open lead and had to settle for a playoff with John Mahaffey to decide the victor. That miscue could have left him flustered in the following day's extra holes, but he proved early on that he was determined to win. Graham sunk a birdie putt on the fourth hole of the playoff to take a lead he would never give back. It was just the latest in a series of highlights for Graham that year, as he had already rallied from 11 strokes back after two rounds.
