With a vicious wind swirling at the Pebble Beach Golf Links, host course of the 1972 U.S. Open, controlling the distance and direction of shots was extremely difficult for the golfers playing. Those conditions made Jack Nicklaus' shot on the par-3 17th all the more impressive. His tee shot landed right near the pin, hit the flagstick and finally ended up within a foot of the cup. He birdied the hole and went on to win the title, his 13th career major and fourth U.S. Open victory.
