Ben Hogan's participation in the 1950 U.S. Open was remarkable in itself; the event was held 16 months after he was nearly killed in an automobile crash that left him with a double-fracture of the pelvis, a fractured collarbone, a left ankle fracture, a chipped rib and blood clots. His perseverance through the event, and subsequent win, were even more remarkable. Gritting his way through excruciating leg cramps on the back nine of the final round, he stumbled on to earn a tie and force a three-person playoff. Hogan then claimed his second U.S. Open title.
