After 72 holes at Oakmont Country Club in the 1994 U.S. Open, 24-year-old Ernie Els was tied with Colin Montgomerie and Loren Roberts. After an 18-hole playoff, Els was still tied with Roberts. The South African needed two more holes in a sudden-death playoff to win the first major of his career. He captured victory on the 11th hole of the course, a 378-yard par 4. Roberts had recorded a bogey 5, which meant Els just needed a two-putt for the win. Choking back nerves, he drained a four-footer for the championship.
