Retief Goosen had already won two U.S. Opens, and in 2005 he looked poised to win his third. The South African had a three-stroke lead over his nearest competitors heading into the final round, but that cushion wasn't nearly enough. Dropping six strokes in the first nine holes on the final day (including a double bogey on the second hole) and adding five more bogeys on the back nine, Goosen shot an 81 on the final day to finish in a tie for 11th. "I played rubbish at the end of the day," he said. "There is nothing else to say." It was a shocking collapse for the former champion.
