Just one day earlier in the 1990 U.S. Open, Hale Irwin had needed a clutch birdie to force a playoff. Tied with Mike Donald after the end of the 18-hole playoff, he once again called on his putting skills. On the first extra playoff hole, Irwin found the cup on an eight-foot birdie putt and earned a joyful celebration. The win came 11 years after his second U.S. Open title and came in the midst of a five-year PGA Tour title drought.
