A long birdie putt on the 17th hole moved Colin Montgomerie into a tie for the lead on the final day of the 2006 U.S. Open, but his success was short-lived. On the 18th, a poor decision on what club to use left his tee shot short and in the right rough. He found the green on his next shot, but Montgomerie then three-putted to record a double bogey. The Scot finished one stroke back. It was just another example of his close calls at the U.S. Open; Montgomerie had finished as the runner-up twice before and had one third-place finish.
