Although they were tied late in the final round of the 1982 U.S. Open, Jack Nicklaus was safely in the clubhouse while Tom Watson was facing a difficult rough shot on the 17th hole. If he hit the ball too hard, it was entirely likely it would end up rolling into the Pacific Ocean. Instead of a disaster, however, Watson had a perfect shot. His chip shot hit the flagstick and dropped in for a birdie. Watson subsequently birdied the 18th hole to take a two-stroke victory.
