Trailing by four strokes heading into the final day at the 1990 U.S. Open, Hale Irwin stormed back with a 31 on the back nine to force a playoff. He capped that run with a 45-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to force a playoff, celebrating his feat by taking a victory lap around the green and high-fiving his fans. The following day, he captured the championship, his third win at the event.
