Universal impact of the Yankees Dec. 18: Curtis Granderson is looking forward to playing with the New York Yankees, a team widely recognized around the world. |
The FBI has questioned country singer Mindy McCready as investigators try to determine whether Roger Clemens lied to Congress when he said he had never taken performance-enhancing drugs, the New York Daily News reports.
McCready was first linked to the case when the Daily News reported last month that the singer and Clemens had a romantic relationship off and on for years. McCready said she couldn't deny the affair. Sources close to the government's investigation told the newspaper that FBI agents questioned McCready about her long relationship with Clemens, which began in 1991, and continued until 2006.
"She's relevant because she spent 15 years in a relationship with Roger Clemens and probably knows a lot about Roger's associates and activities," Richard Emery, one of McNamee's attorneys, told the newspaper. "She may have leads to people Roger associated with that the FBI wants to follow. She could lead to a lot of probative information."
McCready is relevant to the Clemens case because the pitcher filed a defamation suit against his former trainer, Brian McNamee. McNamee told federal investigators Clemens used steroids and human growth hormone. Clemens says that statement ruined his reputation, but McNamee's legal team could argue Clemens' extramarital relationships had already damaged that reputation.
Interviewing McCready about Clemens' use of performance enhancing drugs also has some precedence. Kimberly Bell, a former mistress of Barry Bonds, told investigators that the slugger was using steroids to repair an elbow injury in the late 1990s.
Sources told the Daily News, the FBI has inquired about several women involved with Clemens, as well as other people agents have already interviewed. They include trainer Kelly Blair, the owner of a Houston-area gym, Shaun Kelley, the owner of a Houston weight-loss center and Jose Canseco, Clemens' former teammate and an admitted steroid user.
