Want to make a difference? Here's how

  Fact file: Consumer tips
Saving the world, one step at a time

Most people like the idea of helping the planet, saving U.S. jobs, eating locally and cutting your budget. But let’s face it: not everyone has the time, energy or other resources to become a consumer extremist.

Here are some small steps that can make a difference:

— Cook food in a more energy-efficient microwave or toaster oven, instead of your conventional oven, to reduce energy use and your bills.
— Use environmentally friendly vinegar and water solutions to clean your house, rather than expensive chemical products which may be toxic.
— Save money, help the environment and eat locally by growing your own vegetables this summer.
— Go to CatalogChoice.org and request that your name be removed from catalog mailing lists. You’ll save trees and reduce your temptation to pull out the credit card.
— Save money and the planet by visiting local thrift stores or consignment shops instead of the mall.
— Swap out red meat for eggs or chicken one day a week to reduce your carbon footprint and save some money.
— Reduce waste – and save a few cents – by bringing your own reusable bags to the grocery store, using a reusable water bottle and bringing your own coffee mug.
— Reduce your carbon footprint and save money by taking public transportation, walking or biking to work one day a week.
— Instead of heading to the mall the next time you need an item of clothing, look online to see if there is an American-made equivalent for a reasonable price.
— Go through your own attic or basement – or those of your parents or grandparents – and see if you can find dishware, pots and pans, silverware or other items before buying new ones. That free item may also be made domestically.
