Seeded fourth at the 2003 French Open, Justine Henin earned a spot in the finals after defeating defending champion Serena Williams in the semifinals. She beat compatriot Kim Clijsters in straight sets to capture the first Grand Slam title of her career. She also became the first Belgian player ever to win a Grand Slam singles title.
