Still ranked No. 1, the Belgian has announced her immediate retirement

Suffering from an infection with a strain of cytomegalovirus and an immune system problem, Justine Henin's 2004 took a turn for the worse at the start of the clay court season. She was constantly lethargic, sleeping for up to 18 hours a day and unable to remain in competitive shape. Henin did decide to compete in the French Open in an attempt to defend her title, but she lost in the second round. It was just the second time in 15 Grand Slam events she had bowed out prior to the fourth round.
