This was going to be my best "WWW" yet, but then midway through the column I forgot the lyrics ("Bob Marley, dude!"). Sorry.

Chuck Can Take A Joke
Why is the "NBA on TNT" our favorite studio show that does not have Cris Collinsworth? Here's one reason, from the other night.

So That's Where He's Gone
Forty years ago Simon & Garfunkel asked the rhetorical question, "Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?" The answer, apparently, is UNLV -- following stints at Arizona State and Mesa (Ariz.) Community College. The 2008 Runnin' Rebels baseball roster includes an outfielder named Joe DiMaggio who even wears No. 5. The junior from Crystal Lake, Ill., who claims not to be a descendant of the Yankee Clipper, is batting .233.

When UNLV last faced arch-rival Nevada, DiMaggio went 1-1 as a pinch-hitter while Wolfpack outfielder Aaron Henry (who wears No. 44) went 1-2. The game was played on April Fools Day.

Average Joes
Speaking of Joes and the Yankees, the following are records that New York has had at certain points this spring during Joe Girardi's first six weeks as manager. And, yes, we know, two All-Star starters (Jorge Posada and Alex Rodriguez) have been on the DL for much of that time:
April 2:   1-1
April 4:   2-2
April 6:   3-3
April 8:   4-4
April 10: 5-5
April 12: 6-6
April 14: 7-7
April 18: 9-9
April 20: 10-10
April 25: 12-12
April 27: 13-13
April 29: 14-14
May 3:   16-16
May 6:   17-17
May 8:  18-18

Final Frame
We mourn the passing, earlier this week, of William C. Hargrove of Clermont, Ga. Hargrove, 106, was designated by the U.S. Bowling Congress as "the oldest league bowler ever." In fact, he went bowling just last week. Hargrove, who could still bowl his age, died last Monday. He would have turned 107 today.

Brief Tenure
You likely remember the five-day Notre Dame coaching tenure of George O'Leary, which was remarkable both for its brevity and for the fact that O'Leary may be the only football coach in Fighting Irish history not to have three books written about him.

Previously O'Leary had been at Georgia Tech, where the best player he ever coached was quarterback Joe Hamilton, the 1999 Heisman runner-up. On Wednesday, just 10 days after being named Assistant Director of Player Personnel at his alma mater, Hamilton resigned. One day earlier Hamilton had been arrested by Georgia Tech police for DUI, hit and run and marijuana possession.

A New Addition to the All-Aptly Named Team
We like to keep a file on aptly named humans. New York Yankee purse-string holder Brian Cashman is an obvious choice, as is ESPN spokesman Rob Tobias. And now we can add Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, who on Sunday ran a 9.76 in the 100 meters. That's the second-fastest legal time in history. Bolt … of lightning.

By the way, will a guy whose first name begins "USA" get more love from our parent network come August?

Pitching Extremes
On Wednesday, Cliff Lee of the Cleveland Indians (5-0) faced Chien Ming Wang of the New York Yankees (6-0). It was the first time in 20 years that a pair of AL starters entered the same game with 5-0-or-better records. Lee shut out the Yanks, 3-0, to move to 6-0.

Meanwhile, in Pittsburgh, San Francisco Giant "ace" Barry Zito fell to 0-7 with a 3-1 loss to the Pirates. Zito will earn $14.5 million this season, while Wang and Lee will both earn $4 million.

Taking Stokke
Remember Allison Stokke? A year ago this photo of Stokke, then a senior at Newport Harbor High in Newport Beach, Calif., appeared on the web, inciting a spike in blogging activity and an unprecedented amount of interest in women's pole-vaulting. The fact that Stokke was the second-ranked prep pole-vaulter in the country (13-7) almost made items such as this quasi-legitimate.

A year later, what's up with Stokke? She is now a freshman at Cal, and earlier this spring she set the school record in her event with a vault of 13-3 1/2. The mark has since been topped by junior Katie Morgan (13-5 3/4). Incidentally, there are 19 freshman on the Golden Bear women's outdoor track team (our favorite among them, simply by name, being Hayley Huxtable), but just one who does not have a photo accompanying her bio.

60'6" Was Just Too Close
The latest chapter in the "Behind the Music"-like saga of Rick Ankiel is actually the ideal denoument. Ankiel, you recall, was in 2000 a St. Louis Cardinal rookie pitching phenom who could not find the plate -- or even the batter's box -- in the NLCS. The other night in Coors Field Ankiel, now the Cards' centerfielder, threw not one but two perfect strikes from the deep in the gap to nail Colorado Rockies runners at third base. The distance seems to suit him better.

Didn't We See Nicole Kidman Play This Part in "To Die For"?
Meet new NESN (New England Sports Network) sideline reporter Heidi Watney, who has the Red Sox beat. Watney last worked at KMPH in Fresno but was dismissed in September under mysterious circumstances (although we're certain that she did not coerce Joaquin Phoenix into murdering her husband).

Watney, who provided her age (26) in her first NESN appearance, takes a bold step by moving cross-country to cover a team with a most obsessed fan base. Then again, you know who watches lots and lots of Red Sox games on NESN? ESPN executives.
