61. O.J on SNL (1978)
The Juice, at the height of his fame, does the opening monologue in a brown Conehead mask without once referring to his cranial prop.
62. Catch of the Day: Cheryl Tiegs (1978)
Recipe: Take SI swimsuit model, fishnet bathing suit and camera. Just add water.
63. 63 (1970)
Bare-footed kicker? That's nothing. Tom Dempsey of the New Orleans Saints was a half-footed kicker whose 63-yard field goal is not only the longest in NFL history (Jason Elam tied the mark in 1998), but it also beat the Detroit Lions.
64. George Gervin vs. David Thompson (1978)
With the NBA season scoring title on the line, two ABA refugees duel in different cities on the season's final day. In the afternoon the Nuggets' Thompson, alias "Sky Walker," scores 73 points in a game against Detroit. That evening the Spurs' Gervin, a.k.a. "The Iceman," scores 63 (58 in the first half alone) against the Jazz to win the title by 7/100ths of a point per game.
65. Woody Goes Bananas! (1979)
Woody! "Did he!?!" is what we all thought watching live as Ohio State's legendary coach, Woody Hayes, slugged Clemson's Charlie Bauman after he made the game-clinching interception in the Liberty Bowl.
66. Jackie Earle Haley
He starred in two of the '70s better sports films. Haley was Harley-riding pre-teen free agent Kelly Leak in "The Bad News Bears" ('76), then followed it up as bench-press fanatic Moocher in "Breaking Away" ('79). In later years Haley would grow more than a foot and serve as Dennis Rodman's babysitter with the L.A. Lakers ... I think.
67. My Name Is Earl ... bitch (1979)
Earl Campbell. Jack Tatum. The first goal-line collision that resulted in concussions for home viewers. It was that epic. In his prime, I'd have taken Earl Campbell over the shark from "Jaws."
68. Jo Jo Mojo
The decade gave us not one but two famous sports Jo Jo's. There was Hall of Famer Celtic guard Jo Jo White and lovely figure skater Jo Jo Starbuck. One of them was married to Terry Bradshaw. Come to think of it, the decade also gave us a pair of non-caffeinated Starbucks (Jo Jo and the dude from "Battlestar Galactica").
69. Bird vs. Magic (1979)
The NCAA title game that rescued the NBA and provided a glimpse of what March Madness could become.
70. "The Jericho Mile" (1979)
Peter Strauss stars as an imprisoned miler hoping for a shot at the Olympic Trials. Made-for-TV movies weren't supposed to be this good.
71. Yo! Country for Old Men
Raiders backup QB and field-goal kicker George Blanda played 26 seasons, retiring when he was 48 (cruelly, Oakland won its first Super Bowl the year after he retired). Hockey' Gordie Howe was still playing into his 50s at decade's end.
71.5. 715 (1973)
Hank Aaron was all class in the most significant moment for blacks in baseball since Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier.
72. Bucky &$%! Dent! (1979)
Red Sox fans hate the Yankee shortstop for the crushing home run he hit in 1978. Yankee fans pity him for acting in the made-for-TV movie "The Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders," also starring '70s icons Bert Convy, Jane Seymour and Lauren Tewes.
73. Allison vs. Yarborough (1979)
Donnie Allison and Cale Yarborough collide on the final lap of the Daytona 500, and then get into a fistfight in the first nationally televised flag-to-flag coverage of the race. The King, Richard Petty, wins. NASCAR's watershed moment.
74. "Up With People" Super Bowl Halftime Performance (1976)
There's an energy crisis. Wack jobs keep taking pot shots at President Ford. We're in the middle of a recession. Why are these people so happy?
