APQ: With his love of the game and his on-the-field coaching of his mostly young receiving corps, what are the chances of Brett Favre taking a position within the team upon his retirement?
— Doug, Kannapolis, N.C.
A: I don’t think there is any chance of Favre joining the Packers coaching staff or front office upon retirement. The one exception could be in a limited, good-will ambassador type of role. Favre has made it clear he is looking forward to golfing, hunting and spending time with family and friends in Mississippi when he retires. He’s not the type of guy who wants to start over again and work harder than he has worked all these years. He would make an outstanding broadcaster, and I would love to see him do that. But I doubt he will be attracted to that field either. If anyone has earned the right to enjoy the good life, he has.
Q: What do you make of the Falcons’ general manager? Is it just a blatant attempt to try and capitalize on some of the Patriots’ success?
— Barb, Powder Springs, Ga.
A: I’ve known Thomas Dimitroff for a number of years and have a great deal of respect for him. He knows his stuff. He also knows the Patriots’ way of doing business, which isn’t a bad thing. Dimitroff should work well with team president Rich McKay and whoever the Falcons hire as head coach. The only issue is if Falcons owner Arthur Blank will give Dimitroff enough patience and time to do the job the right way. Blank is getting a reputation for being a bit impetuous.
Q: If Denver gives Al Wilson a chance to sign with them will he do it?
— Colby Dolezal, Wilson, Kan.
A: There are a couple of things that need to be understood. First, there may have been some bruised feelings between Wilson and the Broncos when they let him go. Second, Wilson still might not pass a physical. And even if he does, there is no guarantee that, at 30 and after 1 1/2 years off, he can still be anywhere near the player he was. So I’d be surprised if the Broncos tried to sign Wilson. I would not be surprised if he is hoping for the Broncos to make a pitch for him.
Q: The Rams have plenty of talent. Do you think our problem is coaching or Marc Bulger?
— John Nolan, Union, Mo.
A: Neither. I think the Rams’ big problem this year was injuries, including injuries to Bulger. The Rams probably were hurt more by injuries than any team in the NFL. Let’s give Scott Linehan a healthy team before we come to the conclusion that he can’t do the job.
