Manning, defense helps Giants avoid 3-peat

QB finally looked like franchise player New York hoped for on draft-day

Eli Manning celebrates after throwing a 52 yard touchdown pass to Amani Toomer.

A sack by Reggie Torbor helped end the first drive. An intentional grounding against Romo stopped the second and McQuarters picked off Romo in the end zone in the closing seconds with Dallas at the Giants 23.

It was McQuarters second game-clinching interception in the past two weeks. The veteran also had one in the wild-card game against Tampa Bay.

“It was my best interception because it was my last,” said McQuarters, who took over at cornerback after rookie Aaron Ross left with a shoulder injury in the third quarter.

New York won despite having the ball for less than 24 minutes and giving up three scoring drives that covered 96, 90 and 62 yards. Those drives lasted 43 plays and 23 minutes and 32 seconds, draining the already banged-up defense.

Now the guys who dubbed themselves the All Joes against the All Pros are one game away from the Super Bowl.

No one gave them a chance against the Cowboys except themselves. They felt a play here and there and they could beat “America’s Team.”

Now it’s on to Green Bay for the Giants, who were written off early this season after consecutive losses to Dallas and Green Bay to start the season.

“We’re 60 minutes away,” Burress said. “We’ve got to focus on the task at hand. Green Bay came to our place and beat us pretty good. They’re a good team.”

With Manning finally playing like the franchise player they hoped he’d become, the Giants can be pretty good, too.
