Sunderland's Kieran Richardson celebrates his goal during their English Premier League soccer match against Portsmouth on Sunday.

LONDON - Sunderland improved its chances of avoiding relegation from the English Premier League by beating Portsmouth 2-0 Sunday.

Kieran Richardson scored both goals, in the 33rd and 43rd minutes, and also hit the crossbar from 25 yards in the second half against a team that had won seven of its previous eight league and cup games on the road.

Richardson's first goal came after striker Kenwyne Jones ran down the left and kept playing while Portsmouth defender Sol Campbell stopped, expecting the referee to award a free kick. Jones pulled the ball into the middle and Richardson slid it inside the far post.

The second goal came two minutes before halftime when the England midfielder got past Hermann Hreidarsson and scored with a right-footed shot.

Second-place AS Roma rallied to a 2-1 win at Atalanta. Francesco Totti scored the tying goal before Amantino Mancini put Roma ahead late in the first half.

Inter leads the league with 46 points. Roma is second with 39 points, followed by Juventus with 36 and Udinese with 32.

Udinese beat host Cagliari 1-0 despite playing a man down from the 30th when Felipe got his second yellow card. Italy forward Fabio Quagliarella scored the only goal of the match two minutes later.

Ajax moved into second place by beating AZ Alkmaar 6-1. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, the league's leading scorer, got two goals to bring his tally to 18 this season.

Kenneth Perez also scored for Ajax, which played with a man advantage after AZ midfielder Demy de Zeeuw was ejected in the 43rd for a deliberate handball in the area.
