Getty ImagesMany of Jennings' seemingly easy catches and strides are made possible by the hard work of Donald Driver, Favre's longtime favorite target. Many consider Driver to have had an "off" season, but his toughness and sure hands are so well respected that he still made the Pro Bowl. Even when Driver is not catching passes, he makes his presence felt as a willing downfield blocker. Call him the Hines Ward of the NFC.
James Jones, the Packers' rookie No. 3 wideout, could relate to Grant's problems today. Jones also had some fumbling issues as a youngster in a marquee game, losing the ball twice in Green Bay's Sunday night loss to Chicago in Week 5. When healthy Jones has contributed much the way Jennings did in stretches last season. Jones got open on a key third-and-6 at Green Bay's 49 on the third possession, turning in a 31-yard catch to keep the Packers' first TD drive alive.
As good as Jennings has been, he didn't start Saturday's game. In fact, the Packers came out with one wide receiver (Driver) two backs (Grant and fullback Korey Hall) and two tight ends (Lee and Bubba Franks). Getting Franks healthy at the end of the regular season was a big boon. In Franks' absence, Lee got a chance to show he's a sneaky good receiver. Now with the Packers able to put both on the field, they can either pound Grant or have Favre make a simple throw underneath. Like Lee, Franks helped the Packers convert on a crucial third down in the first half of Saturday's game.
Despite undergoing some considerable rebuilding, personnel turnover and lineup shuffling over the past two years, the Packers' offensive line has developed into a fine group of athletes. In addition to coming together nicely to open up holes for Grant in the athletic-leaning zone-blocking scheme, Favre was only sacked 15 times in the regular season — and was "sacked" just once on Saturday, when Leroy Hill tackled him for no gain on a semi-scramble. In addition to paving the way for Grant's giant game, the offensive line made NFC sack leader Patrick Kerney disappear.
Yes, Favre's name was stamped all over the type of performance that used to be standard fare at Lambeau in January, but it wasn't his right arm or the return of the Lambeau mystique that led to the points explosion. The Packers are loaded and at their best on offense, putting them in great position to keep up with whomever they play next week.
If it's the Cowboys, Favre is certainly well armed for a shootout. If it's the Giants back here at Lambeau, they had better get ready to have a lot more poured on them than the white stuff.
