8-year-olds suspended after hockey brawl

Six players, two coaches removed from tournament following incident

GUELPH, Ont. - Six players and two coaches were suspended following a hockey brawl between two teams of eight-year olds in Guelph, Ontario last week the Edmonton Sun reported.

Three players and a coach from the Duffield Devils and the Niagara Falls Thunder novice Tripe-A teams were ejected from the Guelph Power Play Tournament following a fight during a game.

"These are eight-year-olds," said Staff Sgt. Neal Young of Guelph Police told the Edmonton Sun. "How ridiculous is that?"

Guelph police are reviewing video from the incident to decide if criminal charges will be filed.

Police were called to the arena after a small fight had broken out between players on the ice and both coaches sent more players on the ice from the bench to join the fight, Young said.

Young added that one of the Niagara Falls coaching staff allegedly spit in the face of a Duffield coach.

Law enforcement seized video from parents that were recording the game and will review it before making any formal decisions on the case.

Jeff Hiller, Power Play Tournament chairmen wouldn’t discuss the incident telling the Edmonton Sun, "We're not commenting on it at this time. There is an ongoing investigation."

Several players and coaches were suspended, but organizers didn’t think it was appropriate to eject the teams from the tournament, Hiller said.

The Duffield team continued in the tournament.  The Niagara Falls team voluntarily withdrew and went home early.
