Street Sense stud fee set at $75,000

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Street Sense will stand in Kentucky for $75,000 and Hard Spun for $50,000 in 2008, Sheikh Mohammed al-Maktoum's Darley operation announced Tuesday.

Also included on the 2008 stallion roster for Darley's Lexington farm, Darley-at-Jonabell, was record-equaling Cigar Mile winner Discreet Cat, signaling his retirement from racing after a third-place finish in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. A 4-year-old son of Forestry, he will stand for $30,000. Discreet Cat also won the Jerome Breeders' Cup Handicap and the United Arab Emirates Derby, both Grade 2 events, and earned $1,694,180 from 6 wins and 2 thirds in 9 starts.

Any Given Saturday's plans have yet to be decided, according to Dan Pride, Darley's chief operating officer in America.

Darley also announced that it would raise the stud fee for Street Sense's sire, Street Cry, from $50,000 to $100,000. Street Cry also stands at Darley-at-Jonabell in Lexington. He has sired four Grade 1 or Group 1 winners around the world from his first two crops to race.

Darley purchased Street Sense, Hard Spun, and Any Given Saturday earlier this year as part of an aggressive sweep of the globe's top stallion prospects. The global breeding program purchased Street Sense, the 2006 juvenile champion and 2007 Kentucky Derby winner, and Hard Spun, the Grade 1 winner who was runner-up this year in both the Derby and the Breeders' Cup Classic, this summer for an estimated $50 million and $20 million, respectively. The purchased of Any Given Saturday came in August after that Distorted Humor colt won the Haskell.

Hard Spun finished second behind probable Horse of the Year Curlin in last Saturday's Breeders' Cup Classic, with Street Sense finishing fourth and Any Given Saturday crossing the wire sixth.

In addition to these top American runners, Darley also bought an undisclosed number of shares in Any Given Saturday's sire, Distorted Humor. Maktoum also bought breeding rights to Epsom Derby winner Authorized, European champion Manduro, Japanese star Admire Moon, European runners Teofilo and New Approach, and popular Irish stallion Invincible Spirit.
