OTTAWA - New York Rangers left wing Sean Avery suffered a Grade 2 shoulder separation in Saturday night’s game and is expected to be sidelined for four weeks, team president Glen Sather announced on Sunday.
During Saturday’s game, Avery was hit by Ottawa’s Chris Neil in the offensive zone with 7:23 gone in the opening session. Neil received an elbowing minor on the play.
Avery grimaced after the hit before heading to the bench and he did not return to the game.
Avery, 27, appeared in 84 games with the Rangers and Los Angeles Kings last season, registering a career-best 18 goals and 30 assists. He also ranked fifth in the NHL with 174 penalty minutes.
The Detroit Red Wings equaled an NHL record with their 20th straight win at home, beating the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 Sunday night on the strength of Johan Franzen's tiebreaking goal early in the third period.
