Oh, really? That makes him one of the few.

That 56 spot had to be tough on Rod Marinelli, the Lions’ defensive-minded coach who was raised in Tony Dungy’s Tampa-2 system. Uh, maybe instead of picking a wide receiver in next year’s draft, Matt Millen can maybe, like, choose a defensive player.

The Bengals’ Marvin Lewis can relate; a week ago, his beloved, but deeply flawed defensive unit was on the receiving end of that Derek Anderson, 51-point onslaught (yes, we said Derek Anderson onslaught) in the Dawg Pound.

Maybe the Colts started this trend last year, proving that defense doesn’t always win a championship. Peyton Manning & Co. did benefit from some solid defensive play late last season, but offense drives that team. Always has, always will. That sort of philosophy could be catching.

But not for everyone. How do you figure the Saints, who still haven’t recaptured their offensive mojo from last season. What about the Chargers? Widely regarded as the most talented team on paper, they were supposed to win on auto-pilot this season, but it hasn’t worked out that way under new coach Norv Turner.

Something isn’t cool in San Diego. A year ago, LaDainian Tomlinson delivered one of the greatest offensive seasons in NFL history, with a record 31 touchdowns. After three games, in this crazy season of points, points and more points, LT’s touchdown total is stunning.

One.
