Johnson can tame Monster Mile

Defending Cup champion primed for win at Dover International Speedway

On Sunday Jimmie Johnson has a solid shot at picking up his fourth career win at Dover (Del.) International Speedway in the second race of the Chase for the Nextel Cup, writes Johnny Benson of MSNBC.com.

Other drivers in the Chase who appear poised to connect with solid success at Dover are Kyle Busch, Martin Truex Jr. (the winner of the June race), Jeff Burton, and Denny Hamlin.

Among the non-Chasers, Dale Earnhardt Jr. could be the top driver to keep a close watch on.

My darkhorse is Kasey Kahne, who isn't in the playoff, but who could take advantage of the high groove to run on at Dover.

Keys to success at Dover
Dover International Speedway is one of three concrete tracks (Bristol Motor Speedway and Martinsville Speedway are the others) on the Nextel Cup circuit.

The track surface at Dover is much smoother than the one at Bristol and thus cars get plenty of grip. There are two distinct grooves, meaning drivers can run high on this track. This is a very fast track and the sensation of speed the drivers feel is probably greater than it is at the superspeedways.

The corners at Dover are long and that contributes to why this is such a physically demanding layout for drivers. Dover is also a track where drivers have to be very patient and precise.

Pit road at Dover is very tight and becomes even tighter when cars come in under green. It's treacherous to get on it, to have work done to a car on it, and to get off of it. It's one of the toughest pit roads to enter on the Cup circuit.

At Dover this Sunday I could easily foresee the chances at a win of at least one driver being eliminated due to an incident on an overcrowded pit row. But with the Car of Tomorrow in use the damage from any incidents may prove more repairable so that may save some drivers from having their day ruined.

In most of the pit boxes at Dover the driver has virtually no room, so there are just a handful of good pit boxes with the last one -- the one closest to Turn 1 -- being the best. That makes winning the pole and getting to pick that pit box important to one's chances of winning the race.
