Pittsburgh point guard subdued by stun gun

Fields arrested, tried to grab off-duty police officer’s weapon

PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh point guard Levance Fields was arrested early Sunday outside a nightclub after authorities said he tried to grab an off-duty police officer’s weapon and was subdued with a stun gun.

Fields was in Pure nightclub at about 1:50 a.m. when the off-duty officer, who was working security at the club, approached him and asked him to stop yelling and using offensive language, according to a police affidavit.

Fields left the club and began arguing with an unidentified male in the street, where the officer said he approached Fields again and repeated his request.

Fields punched the officer in the chest, then grabbed at the officer’s weapon, authorities said. The officer pushed him away and another security guard shot Fields in the chest with a Taser.

Fields was taken to Mercy Hospital before being transported to Allegheny County Jail. He was arraigned Sunday afternoon on charges of aggravated assault, disarming a law enforcement officer, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness and released pending a Sept. 24 hearing.

The nightclub was holding an under-21 dance and was not serving alcohol, owner Vince Isoldi said.

Pitt coach Jamie Dixon said he had been told about the incident.

“At this juncture, we will let the judicial process run its course before determining what disciplinary action is necessary,” Dixon said in a statement. “We have built a successful program at Pitt, on and off the court, by prioritizing personal accountability and responsibility. We will not compromise when it comes to those values.”

Fields, a 5-foot-10 native of Brooklyn and a starter at point guard since his freshman season, led Pitt in assists last season and was the team’s fourth-leading scorer with 9.2 points per game.
