Griffey’s salary doesn’t faze Mariners
Ken Griffey Jr.
is owed more than $8 million for the rest of 2008 and has a $16 million option for 2009 with a $4 million buyout. The word is that this kind of cash payout isn’t worrying the folks in Seattle, who apparently would trade the Space Needle in order to have this guy back in Coffee Town. Griffey, by the way, got a good laugh yesterday when he paid off a $1,500 debt to Josh Fogg in pennies. (Dayton Daily News)

Cashman might not last entire season
Yanks GM Brian Cashman’s contract is up at year’s end and Hank Steinbrenner’s blood pressure is rising due to the team’s losses. Not a good combo. Steinbrenner said in spring training he wanted to extend Cashman but rumor has it that Cashman isn’t likely to be asked to return unless he can somehow turn this team around. (New York Times)

White Sox standing pat?
White Sox Manager Ozzie Guillen talks with GM Kenny Williams about personnel all the time but somehow can’t imagine what could possibly be done to improve the White Sox roster that is only a game and a half out of first. “Not much we need,” he says. (Chicago Sun-Times, scroll down)

Magowan expected to step down Friday
Peter Magowan
has been running the Giants for 15-plus years and it’s looking like he’ll tell his investment partners on Friday morning that he’s stepping down from the post. An email went out to the group this week that asked them to come to the park Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. to discuss “some investments the Giants are contemplating.” (San Francisco Chronicle)

Big Daddy Briggs needs safe-sex counseling?
A paternity suit against Chicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs is apparently very close to being settled but the 27-year-old Sacramento native reportedly hasn’t been around the courtroom where his 21-year-old ex-girlfriend and another woman, who is pregnant with another of his supposed spawn, have been telling their tales. Instead, he’s supposedly in Arizona, living with another woman who recently had another one of his babies. (Chicago Sun-Times)

’Boys still negotiating with Barber, Hamlin
The Cowboys are still figuring out the contracts for restricted free agent Marion Barber and franchised safety Ken Hamlin, who are both staying away from the team and any organized workouts until deals can be worked out. Owner Jerry Jones fully expects both deals will be in place before training camp. (Dallas Morning News)

Strahan still silent about his future
Giants defensive lineman Michael Strahan apparently knows whether he’s going to retire or not but he doesn’t feel like telling anybody else yet. Teammates are still reportedly calling and asking him to return, which must make him feel good. Good enough to return? Giants execs are hoping so. (New York Post)

Two tackles don’t show at Bengals camp
Bengals offensive tackles Levi Jones and Willie Anderson didn’t show up for the recent voluntary workouts. Jones apparently wants a trade and Anderson reportedly hasn’t fully recovered from a foot injury. Both players’ jobs could be in jeopardy when training camp rolls around. (Cincinnati Enquirer)

Dolphins’ Ricky Williams sharing the load?
Ricky Williams
has apparently put his bong into storage. He is supposedly in great shape, something Bill Parcells is always fond of. Parcells apparently told Williams that he’d be sharing the running-back load with Ronnie Brown when the season rolls around. Williams also mentioned that he had recently turned down an invite to hang out on Cedric Brown’s boat. Apparently, Williams is no dummy.  (Palm Beach Post)

Walsh hiding Isiah in Europe?
Knicks prez Donnie Walsh apparently didn’t want the team’s former coach and GM Isiah Thomas around town for the announcement of new coach Mike D'Antoni earlier this week so the word is that he sent him over to Europe to scout two potential players in Italy and France, Danilo Gallinari and Nicolas Batum. Not the worst places to be. (New York Post)

Mavs’ Carlisle keeping Howard around
New Mavs coach Rick Carlisle apparently had dinner with Josh Howard last night and seemed ready to tell him that he wants him around long-term even though most speculation has Howard, who recently admitted smoking dope during the off-season, getting shipped to another team this summer. (Dallas Morning News)

Artest headed to Mavericks?
New Mavs coach Rick Carlisle spent some time with Ron Artest in Indiana and he loves the guy: "This guy is one of the real difference-makers that we have in this league,” he said. Could Artest be headed to Dallas? What Mark Cuban wants, he tends to get. (Fort Worth Star-Telegram)

Redick wants trade or playing time
Magic shooting guard J.J. Redick asked to be unloaded from the team back in January just before the trading deadline. Obviously that didn’t work out for him, but he’s not backing off his request now. The 2006 first-round pick expects to come back to Orlando for next season but is saying he wants more playing time or to get traded somewhere where that will happen for him. (Orlando Sentinel)
