NORFOLK, Va. - NBA star Allen Iverson’s stepfather was indicted on federal drug distribution charges after police said they found crack cocaine in his car in April.
Michael Andre Freeman, 51, will remain jailed until his bond hearing Friday. He was to have been in court Aug. 24 but the hearing was postponed a week to give him time to find a lawyer, the U.S. District Court clerk’s office said Monday.
Freeman was Iverson’s mentor while the Denver Nuggets guard grew up in Newport News and Hampton.
He was indicted June 13 on federal charges of possession of crack cocaine with intent to distribute. Newport News police arrested Freeman in April. At the time, police said an officer who stopped Freeman for a minor traffic violation found the crack in the vehicle.
State drug charges were dropped last week as the federal prosecution proceeds.
