University investigates possible lacrosse hazing

Millersville women's team members shown at drinking party, Web site says

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Photographs posted on the Web site of an anti-hazing group appear to show members of the Millersville University women’s lacrosse team at a drinking party, and school officials said Thursday they are investigating.

The 16 photos show women wearing men’s underwear on their heads, drinking from what appear to be beer cans duct-taped to their hands, and wearing their hair rolled up in tampons. Two of the photos show what appears to be a printout of a photo of Millersville lacrosse coach Barbara Waltman with the words “KISS ME” written on it.

The Web site, www.ncaahazing.com, obscured the women’s faces with black bars and circles, but said the names and faces matched the university’s current team roster. The photos were apparently taken in February 2006 and February 2007.

Millersville’s athletic director, Peg Kauffman, said Thursday she had been unaware of the photos until a local television station called to inquire about them last week. She said school officials are examining the photos to determine who participated.

“We’re not 100 percent sure ... that all of them are student athletes,” Kauffman said.

Waltman told the New Era newspaper of Lancaster that some team members are in the photos, but said she had not yet spoken to any of the players. Classes begin Monday at the 8,200-student state university about 30 miles southeast of Harrisburg.

“Obviously I’m disappointed in the judgment of my players,” Waltman said in Thursday’s editions of the newspaper. “It’s behavior I do not condone and that is not acceptable.”

A spokesman for the Web site, William Schut, would not say how the photos were obtained, citing a standing practice of not identifying sources. Schut said the site, which is not affiliated with the NCAA, is intended to prod the association into cracking down on hazing at college campuses.

“We are attempting to force the NCAA into breaking their silence by legislating hazing no differently than if an athlete was found guilty of gambling, using banned substances, etc.,” Schut said in an e-mail to The Associated Press.
