Sore left ankle keeps Beckham sidelined

Galaxy star misses scheduled start against Toronto FC; game a 0-0 tie

David Beckham sits in a suit on the bench as the Los Angeles Galaxy take on Toronto FC on Sunday.

Donovan admitted he was surprised by the level of attention.

“I don’t think people realize how famous that guy is,” Donovan said. “I didn’t. We didn’t. It’s been fun. At times it’s a little tiring but it’s definitely going away now. It helps us focus, it helps us bond a little more.”

Fans wearing England and Real Madrid jerseys with Beckham’s name on the back dotted the stands at BMO Field, but they were drowned out by a partisan crowd who booed when Beckham was shown on the scoreboard. One fan wore a T-shirt that read “David Beckham is rubbish.”

“I’d love Beckham to have played,” Toronto coach Mo Johnston said. “It’s just unfortunate that he had the ankle injury.”

MLS commissioner Don Garber said he and Beckham understood the fans’ frustration. Still, Garber wasn’t worried about negative fallout in Toronto, a first-year team that has sold out all its home games.

“This team is doing just fine without David Beckham,” Garber said.

While he has yet to make an impact on the field, Beckham’s presence is being felt through sponsorship and merchandising deals. Garber said jersey sales have risen 700 percent for Galaxy merchandise and 300 percent league-wide this season.

Sunday was the Galaxy’s first league match since a 2-2 tie with Kansas City on July 7. Los Angeles (3-5-5) has played a league-low 13 games so far, its schedule backloaded to maximize exposure following Beckham’s arrival. Houston, which leads the West, has played 20.

“Every time teams play us now, they’re bringing their ‘A’ game,” Donovan said.

Notes: Beckham and some of his Galaxy teammates will attend Monday afternoon’s baseball game between the Toronto Blue Jays and the New York Yankees. Yallop, born in Canada, is scheduled to throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
