It is written in Bonds’ biography on the Giants’ official web site that his father, Bobby, used to watch his son’s Little League and high school games from afar. Reason being: The elder Bonds was a major league baseball player of note. He didn’t want to cause an undue distraction at his son’s event by sitting in the stands.
Rather than shield his son from the circus, as his father did with him, Barry Bonds drags Nikolai into the center ring. He subjects his high school-aged son to an adult world full of complicated issues and emotions that no teenager can begin to fully comprehend.
Nikolai, who has performed some batboy duties for the Giants, has a locker next to his father’s in the AT&T Park home clubhouse. No other batboy dresses among the players. Nikolai also had his own locker next to his father’s at Dodger Stadium this week. No other Giants player had a locker for his son. Maybe none of them thought to ask. Maybe none of them would even consider asking.
Or maybe this is just another example of Barry Bonds wanting things every which way he can have them. He wants his son at his side. He wants his family in the stands. He wants you, and everyone around him, to know that he occupies a higher station in life than you do. And he apparently wants the rest of the world to accept this arrangement without comment.
It is so uniquely him to pick the path of most resistance, then complain about the road he has to travel. Here’s a thought: If you don’t want your family to endure the slings and arrows you have occasioned with your behavior and your attitudes, put them in a luxury box or have them stay home.
And the next time you come across a media pigpile at a time when you’re feeling sorry for yourself, don’t tell us how much you care about your kids. Show them.
