Lucky in love, not poker, on 07-07-07

LAS VEGAS – According to popular superstition, today – that is, 07-07-07, just might be the luckiest day ever. Certainly a good day to be lucky in love.

And it was because of this day that couples flocked to Las Vegas to get married, hoping that if nothing else, at least luck would give them a shot to live happily ever after.

Clark County issued more than 1,600 marriage licenses on Saturday, but the Rio was tame by comparison, with only seven (of course) ceremonies today, although a videographer I talked with said “They coulda had 24,” such was the demand.

One woman said she had to wait four hours for her ceremony. Guess there are no quick fixes when it comes to being lucky in love.

Another bride, Maria Powell from San Francisco, said it was simply the right time to get hitched.

“My husband and I, we’ve been together for seven years so we decided it was time,” the 39-year-old said. “I work as a nurse, and a lot of older patients told me that according to the Bible it’s good luck. It’s like the opposite of 6-6-6.“

Does she think her marriage will need luck to last? “Not really, but it helps.”

Powell said she didn’t really think about the poor players sweating it out at the World Series of Poker, which is a shame, because some of the best players to hit the felt Saturday could have used a little luck themselves.

Howard Lederer, Annie Duke, Jeff Lisandro, John Juanda, Scott Fischman and Isabelle “No Mercy” Mercier were all among those to bust out on the second Day 1.
