‘Mayhem’ adds spice to middleweight ranks

Miller's wild style, statements draw following of 'mayhem monkeys'

Those are the kind of statements that enliven his growing mob. But outside the ring, Miller is 180 degrees different.

“Outside I’m kind of a silly fool,” said Miller, whose girlfriend is professional comedian Cathy Tanaka. “I say silly things. Whatever comes to my head. That’s just me.”

The other part of Miller’s persona is a rough and tumble attitude for MMA.

“I got that from my old man,” Miller said. “We used to live in government housing, it’s where you meet the most violent little children.”

No wonder they call him Mayhem.

WEC light heavyweight title
Also on the Las Vegas card will be WEC light heavyweight champion Doug “Rhino” Marshall defending his title against Justin McElfresh.

“I’ve traded bombs with heavyweights, and have bled and sacrificed too much to let any light heavy take this belt from me,” said Marshall (5-2) who fights out of Visalia, Calif. “You mess with the Rhino you get the horn.”

WEC was purchased by Zuffa, LLC last year in November. This is the third Las Vegas fight card for the organization. Zuffa, based in Las Vegas, is the parent organization of Ultimate Fighting Championship.

“We plan to expand the WEC throughout 2007 and bring it to a whole new level for WEC fans and fighters and compete with all the top organizations in the sport,” said Peter Dropick, WEC vice president of Events Operations and Production.

“Gracie Hunter” added to FEG and ProElite June 2 card
Kazushi Sakuraba, who’s famous for defeating four Gracie family members, will face Royce Gracie on June 2 at the Los Angeles Coliseum.

The last time Gracie faced Sakuraba was in 2000, when he was forced to surrender in the seventh round due to an injured leg from repeated leg kicks.

Sakuraba is known as the “Gracie Hunter” because of his success against the Brazilian jujitsu masters.

“I’ve been waiting for this fight for close to a decade. It’s been something that I’ve struggled to live with for some time,” Gracie said. “We have mutual respect for each other, but June 2 is circled in my calendar as the date I plan to avenge my family’s legacy from Sakuraba.”

ESPN the Magazine wants Iceman
Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell has been chosen by ESPN the Magazine to be on the cover. He becomes the first mixed martial arts fighter to be featured on the front of the national sports magazine. The issue will come out simultaneously during the week of Liddell’s fight with Quentin “Rampage” Jackson on May 26 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

IBF welterweight boxing champion challenges UFC
Kermit “The Killer” Cintron has challenged any of the UFC fighters in his weight class following his title defense in July.

“I want the fight,” said Cintron, who wrestled in high school. “I can wrestle, I can box. I can beat those UFC fighters at their own game. Tell Mr. (Dana) White to make me an offer and I’ll take on his guy after I fight (Walter) Matthyse on July 14.”

Versus TV
Versus television will be showing three WEC fight cards beginning on June 3. It will also be televising six hone-hour event specials that include the best matches from prior WEC events.
