David Beckham may have a familiar face join him on the Los Angeles Galaxy sidelines this season.
The Galaxy have made an offer to French star Zinedine Zidane, Beckham's former teammate with Real Madrid, the Los Angeles Daily News reported. Zidane retired from competitive soccer after the 2006 World Cup final.
Zidane is regarded as one of the best players in soccer history, leading France to the 1998 World Cup crown and was a three-time FIFA player of the year.
Galaxy team president Tim Leiweke told Italy's Gazzetta dello Sport that "we have contacted his entourage about coming to play for us this year. He knows our door will always be open. His contract won't be a problem," the Daily News reported.
One of the biggest hang-ups on the deal is an MLS rule that says teams can have only one designated player signed for more than $400,000 unless they get another designated player through a trade, as the Galaxy did. Beckham will take one DP slot and Landon Donovan the other, but a one-year league rule says Donovan's spot won't count until next year, the Daily News reported.
All that means the Galaxy has a chance to place Zidane on the field with Beckham and Donovan.
"I can't comment about specifics of any of the negotiations we have. All can say is we continue to court the best players we possibly can," Lalas told the Daily News. "I would certainly think this player would be an asset to any team."
Lalas wouldn't comment on when Zidane would be signed.
"We're discussing possibilities with a number of players and many negotiations take time," Lalas told the paper. "If we feel it's appropriate to spend that time, we will. It all depends how much we think that player will help the Galaxy."
Leiweke has reportedly traveled to France to speak with representatives of the 35-year-old Zidane.
