INDIANAPOLIS - Milka Duno could join Sarah Fisher and Danica Patrick to make the first trio of women to compete in the Indianapolis 500 in the same year.

Duno will drive a pair of cars entered Thursday by Samax Motorsport for the May 27th race.

Cars for Fisher and former winner Buddy Rice already have been entered by Dreyer & Reinbold Racing; cars for Patrick and teammates Michael Andretti, Marco Andretti, Tony Kanaan and Dario Franchitti are expected from Andretti Green Racing before Wednesday’s entry deadline.

Practice for the race will begin with the annual rookie orientation program on May 6-7.

Duno has three wins in the Grand American Racing Series and was part of the second-place team at this year’s prestigious Daytona 24-Hour race, the highest finish by a woman in the 45-year history of the endurance race. She is expected to drive her first IndyCar race at Kansas City on April 29, a week before her debut in rookie tests at Indianapolis.

“It’s a special moment for me, just something I’ve been dreaming about for a long time,” the Venezuelan said last week at Homestead-Miami Speedway, where she announced she intends to run 10 of the series’ 17 races this season. “It’s difficult to explain how I feel because I have so many emotions — a little nervous, a little anxiety, very excited.”

Janet Guthrie became the first woman to race at Indianapolis in 1977. Fisher and Lyn St. James were the first women to drive in the same race in 2000.

The two Samax entries, both Dallaras, were among four cars submitted Thursday. The two others, also Dallaras, were entered by the Racing Professionals team for owner-driver Jon Herb.
