Q: Do you think Ole Miss will make it into the NCAA Tournament?
— Cameron Hilliard, Oxford, Miss.

A: Unless the Rebels win the SEC tournament and get the automatic bid, I seriously doubt it, Cameron. Let’s face it, the chances of Ole Miss winning the tournament this year are slim. Coach Andy Kennedy was a great hire and he has taken a team that finished 14-16 last season and turned things around with a respectable 18-10 record. That’s the only good number for the Rebels. The SEC West has been horrible this season and it would take a terrific nitty gritty sheet for any of those teams to get an automatic bid. Ole Miss has an RPI of 63 this week, with a strength of schedule rating of 78. Those aren’t terrible, but the non-conference SOS (198), road record (2-9) and record in the 10 games (6-4) just don’t add up. Unless someone pulls a big upset in the conference tournament, it looks as if Florida, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, and Kentucky will be the only SEC teams invited to the Big Dance.

Q: Ken, if you could see a college basketball game at any arena in America, where would it be?
— Matt, Wichita, Kan.

A: Matt, that’s the easiest question of the season. Beware Of The Phog. The first on-campus college basketball game I ever attended was at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kan. I fell in love with the place as a kid and that love will never diminish. You can call me biased, but I don’t really care. I am a Kansas grad. I would never turn down an opportunity to watch a game in Cameron Indoor Stadium (Duke), Maples Pavilion (Stanford), the Carrier Dome (Syracuse) or The Palestra in Philadelphia. Those are my other favorites. But nothing comes close to the history, the tradition, the enthusiasm and the energy of Allen Fieldhouse. Game night in Lawrence is special, but you can stand in the Phog when it is empty and feel surrounded by the ghosts of college basketball all the way back to Dr. Naismith.

That building should never, ever be torn down or be replaced by a new facility. Athletic director Lew Perkins and his staff have done a tremendous job since 2003 of upgrading, brightening and updating the building. It’s not just the building. It’s the student fans, the Rock Chalk Chant, the waving of the wheat, the fight songs played by the best basketball band in the nation, and all the rituals that make Kansas basketball such a unique experience. Your timing couldn’t be better, Matt. I’m headed to Lawrence for Saturday’s game between the Jayhawks and the Texas Longhorns with the Big 12 regular season championship on the line. It can’t possibly get any better than that.
