PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Jerome Dyson scored 17 points and Connecticut advanced to the Big East Tournament with a 65-55 win over Rutgers Wednesday night.
The victory clinched one of the final berths in the conference tournament for UConn (17-10, 6-7 Big East), while Rutgers (10-17, 3-11) was eliminated from contention for the third time in seven years.
The win was the 750th overall coaching victory for UConn’s Jim Calhoun, who gained his 500th with Connecticut on Feb. 5.
Jeff Adrien added 14 points, seven rebounds and three steals for UConn, A.J. Price had 10 points and Hasheem Thabeet had eight points, five rebounds and four blocked shots. Rutgers got 15 points each from J.R. Inman and Adrian Hill.
Holding a 28-27 lead, the Huskies went on a 14-3 run to open a 42-30 advantage with 10:32 remaining. UConn took two more 12-point leads, the last coming at 50-38.
Rutgers got within four twice, the final time coming when Marquis Webb hit a 3-pointer to make it 53-49 with five minutes left. Connecticut responded with a bucket by Adrien and two foul shots by Dyson to open a 57-49 lead with 3:02 remaining, and Rutgers got no closer than six the remainder of the game.
