Girls finalists
Annika: There’s considerable sentiment that the expectant parents could do worse than name a girl after the female Tiger, Annika Sorenstam. And Annika is a nice name; it combines Elin’s Nordic heritage with the world’s greatest female golfer. But I can’t see Tiger naming his child after any golfer other than himself, and I’m not sure Elin would be flattered by her husband wanting to name their child after a woman who could be seen as a rival.

Birdie: It’s cute. It could be trendy, and Tiger and Elin could have a thousand yucks sending their little girl off to school every morning by saying, “Bye, bye Birdie.” And that’s the trouble. It’s contrived and it’s just too cute.

Earla/Earlena/Earlene/Earline: If Earl is a favorite for a boy, a feminine variation has to be up there for a girl. Again, it comes down to Tiger’s extraordinary relationship with his father, a relationship that might lead him to coin a variant of that name.

Elin/Elina/Eileen: As noted above, few people seem to name their daughters after their mothers, maybe because a daughter would grow up hating you if people kept calling her “Junior.” But the English equivalent — Eileen — would be close without being identical. It could be the choice.

Katherine: The advantage here is that it can be shortened to “Kat,” which, as we all know, is what a Tiger is. Of course, it can also become Katy or Kate, which doesn’t have nearly the same ring.

Magnolia/Magnolia Layne: I liked Augusta, but you preferred the arbored drive that leads to the clubhouse at Augusta National. It’s a nice name but perhaps a bit too Southern for a California guy.

Those are the choices. It’s time to vote.
