Q: How is it that the Colts are suppose to be so great and yet their coaching staff is never raided like all the past winners? This is the first year even one of their staff has been approached. Could the rest of the league know something? What gives?
— Phillip A. Castello, Greenville, R.I.
A: Tony Dungy left the core of Jim Mora's offensive staff intact when he retained coordinator Tom Moore and line coach Howard Mudd. Moore is 68 and Mudd just turned 65.
Assistant head coach/quarterbacks coach Jim Caldwell has had interviews and so has defensive coordinator Ron Meeks. Since the defense is seen as primarily Dungy's, Meeks is at a slight disadvantage, although Chicago's Ron Rivera is in a similar predicament under Lovie Smith and has received more notice. Leslie Frazier, of course, just got hired by the Vikings as their defensive coordinator, a position he once held in Cincinnati.
Q: Wouldn't it be a good idea for the Bears to get some insurance for the interior defensive line, as proven with Tommie Harris being out the Bears defense became ordinary and no one else could fill the void? I would like to see the Bears go after Warren Sapp of the Raiders to shore up the inside of their defense and give the Raiders their second and third round pick for the 12 year all-pro.
— Bones, Chicago
A: I think the Bears believe Tommie Harris will come back strong and Dusty Dvoracek, their third-round pick last year who spent the season on injured reserve, will be able to give them more depth. I think Warren Sapp certainly has seen better days and the Bears are always inclined to stick with their own draft choices.
One thing GM Jerry Angelo can do is find pass rushers, such as Mark Anderson in the fifth round and Alex Brown in the fourth, so I'm guessing the Bears will make better use of their second and third picks in the draft than in a trade.
Q: Do you think that the Packers should shell out mucho money for an older player like [Randy] Moss? They have [Donald] Driver and [Greg] Jennings, one proven great player and one potentially great. I think they should put the bigger money out for one of the corners or safeties that look like they will be on the market.
— Mac, Laredo, Texas
A: I think you're right, but wouldn't you just love to see Brett Favre throwing passes up for grabs to Randy Moss? Just once? What Favre does best is let his receivers "go get it." What Moss does best is "go get it." It would sure be fun to watch.
Q: Since Al Davis has officially gone insane, who will control the Raiders when he has gone? Seems like they have a lot of talent but no ambition or character.
— C.J. Nellist, Richmond, Va.
A: He doesn't think he's going anywhere, and if he does, he's trying to figure out a way to control things anyway. Al has a son, but there is no clear public plan for the future. I'm not even willing to venture a guess.
