MONTREAL - The son of two-time National Hockey League player of the year Guy Lafleur was charged Thursday with sexual assault involving a minor.

Mark Lafleur, 22, was remanded in custody during a brief appearance in a Montreal courtroom. A bail hearing is scheduled for Monday.

Lafleur has been charged with sexual assault, assault with a weapon, uttering threats and false imprisonment.

“They’re devastated,” Lafleur’s lawyer, Jean-Pierre Rancourt, said of his client’s famous hockey family.

Rancourt said the younger Lafleur suffers from Tourette syndrome, which affects his behavior.

“I’m going to let the judge know Monday that my client needs psychiatric and physical treatment for his illness, Tourette syndrome, and probably a drug addiction.”

Rancourt said Lafleur is to enter a drug and alcohol rehabilitation program on Friday and that he has his family’s support.

The younger Lafleur works at his father’s restaurant in Berthierville, about an hour north of Montreal.

The first incident Lafleur is accused of occurred in August 2005 in Montreal. Other alleged incidents followed in Montreal and in Berthierville, the last on Jan. 12, according to information disclosed in court.

Lafleur is scheduled to be in court next week on separate charges, including dangerous driving and uttering threats.

Guy Lafleur played 17 seasons in the NHL between 1970 and 1991, 14 with the Montreal Canadiens, winning the Hart Memorial Trophy as the league’s most valuable player following the 1976-77 and 1977-78 seasons and was inducted into the Ice Hockey Hall of Fame.
