TRENTON, N.J. - New Jersey Nets star Jason Kidd filed new divorce papers this week citing irreconcilable differences in his request to end his 10-year union to Joumana Kidd, who he says physically and emotionally abused him for the last decade.
Kidd filed the papers days after Gov. Jon S. Corzine signed legislation creating no-fault divorce, allowing couples to dissolve their marriage in six months if they cite irreconcilable differences. Previously, state law required couples wait 18 months.
The new law comes a bit late for Kidd, who already aired his marital dirty laundry earlier this month in his initial divorce filings, when he cited extreme cruelty.
“His priority is to expedite the divorce process and move on as quickly as possible. We believe this is the best approach to accomplish that,” Jason Kidd’s divorce lawyer, Madeline Marzano-Lesnevich, said in a statement to The Associated Press on Friday.
Kidd received an order of protection Jan. 8 and filed for dissolution the next day. Joumana Kidd then filed her own domestic-violence restraining order less than a week later, saying she was the victim, not the perpetrator of the abuse.
It’s unclear if the Kidds have a prenuptial agreement.
A call to Joumana Kidd’s attorney, celebrity divorce lawyer Raoul Felder, wasn’t immediately returned Friday.
