Parcells will return as NFL head coach

Tuna will want to end career on winning note with Giants or Chargers

Bill Parcells is not done as a head coach in the NFL, writes MSNBC.com contributor JT the Brick.

San Diego would be the perfect fit for Parcells if he wanted to win quickly and coach great talent. The defining moments of Parcells’ career were his two Super Bowl championships with the Giants in 1987 and 1991. Phil Simms led the Giants to victory in Super Bowl XXI along with running back Joe Morris, tight end Mark Bavaro and linebacker Lawrence Taylor. The Super Bowl XXV team had Jeff Hostetler at quarterback, veteran running back Ottis Anderson and Taylor and Bavaro.

The current San Diego roster includes MVP running back LaDainian Tomlinson and arguably the best athlete in the league in tight end Antonio Gates. Linebacker Shawne Merriman looks like a Taylor clone while Phillip Rivers is already playing at a Pro bowl level. Marty Schottenheimer will likely be gone after the 2007 season and Parcells could take over a franchise that could easily make several trips to the Super Bowl over the next five seasons. The warm climate of San Diego along with a world-class racetrack at Del Mar would also make a move out west easy for the Tuna to digest.

Parcells is the only coach in NFL history to take four different franchises to the playoffs and is directly responsible for developing the career of another future Hall of Fame coach in Bill Belichick. Parcells will come back for the opportunity of taking possibly his fifth franchise to the Super Bowl or for that one last chance to coach great players who could help him retire as a winner. Remember that winners always want to end their careers being carried off the field as a champion, not walking a way in disgust after his quarterback fumbles a snap and botches a potential game-winning field goal on the road.

The Cowboys are still expected to dominate the NFL headlines the week before the Super Bowl, but I would guarantee you that owner Jerry Jones would rather be preparing to play in the big game instead of listening to all of the negative chatter from the media. With the retirement of Parcells earlier this week, Valley Ranch is now the home of a team with no head coach along with a player who will continue to do whatever it takes to bring attention to himself. Owens still continues to be the most talked about distraction in the NFL and took a cheap shot at Parcells on Tuesday when he said, “Hopefully the owner will hire a coach who can take the team to the next level.”

Jones should not stand for comments like that coming from Owens or any other player on his roster. Jones should have quickly responded in the defense of Parcells and made an example  of Owens heading into the off-season.  I can understand that Jones is busy looking for a new head coach, but his popularity in Dallas and around the NFL could rise if he called out Owens for being a part of the problem in 2006 and one of the reasons why his team didn’t win a playoff game.
