Indiana pulls out victory against UConn

Hoosiers notch fifth straight victory; Huskies' stuggles continue

HARTFORD, Conn. - Roderick Wilmont scored 23 points, including two key buckets down the stretch, as Indiana beat Connecticut 77-73 on Saturday.

D.J. White added 21 points and Armon Bassett had 13 for the Hoosiers (14-4).

Indiana was down 68-66 with 1:50 left when Wilmont buried his fifth 3-pointer of the game. After Stanley Robinson answered for UConn, Wilmont hit a runner in the lane to put the Hoosiers up for good.

Both of his late baskets came after Wilmont was called for his fifth personal foul with 2:10 left. Officials changed the foul to White after a conference at midcourt.

Robinson led UConn with 21 points and Jeff Adrien added 15 for the Huskies (13-5).

The Hoosiers looked like they were going to run away with the game early when Bassett hit his first three shots, all from behind the arc, and Indiana built a 16-4 lead.

UConn had a tough time fighting through the double screens set for Bassett and Wilmont, who was 5-of-8 from 3-point range, and the Hoosiers led 26-12 midway through the half.

UConn then went on a 20-5 run over the next seven minutes and took its first lead, 32-31, when Robinson hit a 3-pointer with 2:44 left in the half.

The Huskies led 36-31 before Indiana answered with an 8-0 run. Doug Wiggins’ 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer sent the teams to their locker rooms tied at 39.

UConn outrebounded Indiana 38-22 pulling down 19 offensive boards. The Huskies scored 21 second-chance points, while holding the Hoosiers without a putback.

But UConn struggled from the foul line, hitting just 17 of 28 free throws while Indiana made 20 of 21 from the line.

Wilmont scored the first five points of the second half. He picked up his fourth foul with 6:48 left and Indiana leading 60-58.

The teams came into the game with identical records, but Indiana has now won five in a row while UConn has lost five of seven.
