TAMPA, Fla. - South Florida running back Keeley Dorsey died Wednesday after collapsing during a team conditioning workout at the school’s athletic facility.

The 19-year-old freshman died at University Community Hospital. He was given first aid before he was taken to the hospital, the school said in a statement.

“I hurt for Keeley. I hurt for Keeley’s parents. I hurt for our team,” coach Jim Leavitt said. “Keeley was a tremendous person. He was always upbeat and an inspiration to me and all of us. He had a great impact on our team, and he will be sorely missed.”

Leavitt was in West Palm Beach on a recruiting trip and returned to campus to join his players.

“Our entire athletic family is deeply saddened by this tragic loss,” athletic director Doug Woolard said, adding that Leavitt had spoken with Dorsey’s father.

Dorsey, a graduate of Tallahassee Lincoln High School, rushed for 68 yards on 10 carries in 2006. He scored his only touchdown on a 52-yard run on the final play of the Bulls’ 41-10 season-opening victory over McNeese State. It was South Florida’s longest run of the season.

“The USF community is extremely shocked and saddened by the death of one of our student athletes on campus today,” USF president Judy Genshaft said. “There is nothing more tragic than the loss of one of our students, and our thoughts and prayers go out to Keeley’s family, friends and fellow athletes and students.”
