MILAN, Italy - Inter Milan midfielder Luis Figo will reportedly move to Saudi Arabian club Al Ittihad on a one-year contract in July.
The Gazzetta dello Sport reported the story on its Web site Friday with a photo of Figo being presented with an Al Ittihad jersey by club owner Mansour al-Balwi.
“We signed a contract for a year beginning July 1, 2007,” Al-Balwi told Gazzetta. “I can’t reveal how much the salary is, but it’s one of the biggest deals ever seen in the Middle East.
“Luis Figo has vast experience and will be a great asset for the team.”
Al Ittihad claimed it had signed Figo on Dec. 27 to a six-month deal worth US$8 million (euro6 million) effective immediately, but Inter denied the report.
Nobody was answering the phone at Inter’s media office Friday. Inter is currently training in Bahrain.
The 34-year-old Figo has been with Inter Milan since 2005. He has also played for Sporting Lisbon, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid.
A former captain of Portugal’s national team, Figo retired from international play after earning his 127th cap in the World Cup third-place playoff against Germany in July.
Al Ittihad won the Asian Champions League in 2004 and 2005, and was knocked out in the quarterfinals this year.
