Ohio State
Ohio State didn't have many scholarships to offer, so it was important for the Buckeyes sign quality players. That’s where Tim Beckman was most effective. Beckman, Ohio State's cornerbacks coach, signed five prospects that were all ranked as four-star players on defense. That allowed him to earn a spot as one of the top 10 recruiters in the Big Ten. Rivals100 defensive back Eugene Clifford played at Cincinnati Colerain, a school that usually sends its best players to Michigan. Beckman also went to Florida to pull in linebacker Brian Rolle of Immokalee. Throw in Solomon Thomas, Nate Oliver and Jermale Hines, and Beckman definitely ranks among the best in the Big Ten.
Penn State
Tom Bradley, Penn State's defensive coordinator and secondary coach, made the list of the top 10 recruiters in the Big Ten this season after landing four players that averaged 3.5 stars. The headliners for Bradley were four-star defensive back Nick Sukay and four-star offensive lineman Stefen Wisniewski. Three-star receivers Jon Ditto and Derek Moye were also big additions. Penn State definitely needed to stockpile talent at the receiver spot, and Bradley helped make that happen this season. Nittany Lions fans are excited about Sukay, and for good reason. PSU fans can point toward Bradley as a big reason why there should be happy times in Happy Valley.
Purdue
After a little bit of a down year for the Boilermakers in the class of 2007, Purdue hopes to bounce back in a big way in 2008. That’s where needs come in, and the Boilermakers have quite a few key areas that must be addressed. Those needs start up front with the offensive line. The Boilermakers coaches wanted to get one more lineman than they did last year. Center Robbie Powell needs to be replaced after this season, and tackles Sean Sester and Garret Miller are scheduled to depart in 2008. Purdue goes into 2008 recruiting with a commitment already in hand. Class of 2007 holdover Michael Chacksfield will grayshirt. Defensive end, punter and receiver depth must also be focused on in the 2008 class.
Wisconsin
Henry Mason has long been thought of as one of the best recruiters in the Big Ten. He received further verification of that earlier this week when he was named by Rivals.com as one of the top 10 recruiters in the conference. Mason, the Badgers' receivers coach, pulled in six players this season with an average star rating of 3.5. He did a nice job locally, and was the key recruiter for Rivals100 running back John Clay. Mason also pulled in four-star receiver Nick Toon, the son of former NFL great Al Toon. Mason dipped into Ohio and pulled out Kyle Jefferson and Otis Merrill. He also went to Michigan to land James Stallons, a very talented quarterback.
Brian Johnson, who led Utah to an upset of Alabama in the 2009 Sugar Bowl, is ready for his first season as the Utes' offensive coordinator. At 25, the ex-QB will be the youngest with that job at the FBS level.
