On January 13, Barbaro had another area of his left hind hoof removed and a cast placed on his right hind leg for additional support.  The procedure came less than a week after the popular horse had a significant setback in his recovery from laminitis, which often is fatal and developed after he shattered his leg in the Preakness on May 20.

Finalists for Horse of the Year have not been announced.

Winner of the Cigar Mile, Discreet Cat also is a finalist for the Sprinter Award with Henny Hughes and Thor’s Echo.

Breeders Cup Classic champion Invasor is up for the Older Male award against Lava Man and Premium Tap.  Older Female candidates are Asi Siempre, Fleet Indian and Round Pound.

Todd Pletcher again is a finalist for top trainer along with Kiaran McLaughlin and Doug O’Neill.
