Oklahoma State
Curtis Luper, who coaches OSU's running backs, recruits South Dallas for the Cowboys and was recently named as one of the top 10 recruiters in the Big 12 by Rivals.com. Luper came up with two major gets this season. He signed Rivals100 defensive end Richetti Jones and Rivals250 athlete William Cole. Luper also kept the Cowboys in the hunt for guys like Christian Scott, Graig Cooper and Gerald Jones until the end of the recruiting process. While he doesn't measure up with other recruiters this year as far as quantity, Luper's average of 4.0 stars is a quality matched by few.
Texas
After their success last year, it is no surprise the Longhorns are off to a fast start with class of 2008 players. It started with their first junior day of the year last weekend. Mack Brown and his staff already picked up 10 commitments from the Sunday event, with the possibility of more before their next junior day later this month. One to watch will be Mansfield (Texas) Timberview athlete Antoine Hicks. Rumors continue to swirl that Brenham, Texas, offensive lineman Luke Poehlmann may be close to a decision. Poehlmann received an offer at the UT junior day last weekend.
Texas A&M
Things just keep getting better for Texas A&M. Their 2008 class currently holds more commitments than any other Big 12 team. The Aggies picked up heavily recruited defensive lineman Tony Jerod on Tuesday night. Jerod is close with 2007 Aggie signee Von Miller. Though Jerod is already a solid player, his coach and others agree that he may end up being a better prospect two years down the road. DeSoto coach Dave Meadows says that Jerod may end up weighing 290 pounds in two years. Jerod is a good addition to a solid defensive line class that includes Rod Davis and Damian Square.
Texas Tech
While other schools in Texas have been having success with junior days, the Red Raiders aren’t going to sit and watch. Tech is holding a junior day this weekend. One of the prospects expected to attend is linebacker Kyle Prater, whose recruiting process has taken off very quickly. Prater already holds offers from Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas Tech. When he makes his way to Lubbock, Prater says that he wants to check out the athletic facilities as well as the academic side of the school. Like many other schools, Texas Tech is recruiting Prater at the outside linebacker position. He also is playing baseball for his high school.
Brian Johnson, who led Utah to an upset of Alabama in the 2009 Sugar Bowl, is ready for his first season as the Utes' offensive coordinator. At 25, the ex-QB will be the youngest with that job at the FBS level.
