Mississippi State
Batesville (Miss.) South Panola offensive guard Quin Sanford has picked up an early scholarship offer from the Bulldogs. The 6-foot-3, 270-pounder is being recruited by State defensive line coach Brick Haley and had good things to say about Haley in a recent interview. … Sanford’s teammate, offensive tackle Jermarcus Hardrick, has been invited to a junior day in Starkville. The 6-foot-6, 320-pounder doesn’t currently hold any scholarship offers, but is getting attention from State and a number of other programs.
Ole Miss
Though he just missed making Rivals.com’s list of top 10 recruiters in the SEC, Rebels assistant coach Frank Wilson was outstanding in his home state of Louisiana during the class of 2007 recruiting cycle. Wilson was responsible for Rivals250 offensive lineman Rishaw Johnson, sleeper wide receiver Lionel Breaux, tight end David Rue and others. … Wilson has the Rebels out in front early for Hahnville (La.) High defensive end Nathan Lewis. … Ole Miss has offered Blountstown (Fla.) athlete Ryan Baker as a running back.
South Carolina
The addition of Shane Beamer may pay big dividends on the recruiting trail should Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier choose to assign the Atlanta area to the former Mississippi State assistant. South Carolina recruited the metro area well in the classes of 2005 and ’06, but was a non-factor this year. The program has lured some of its best players out of Georgia over the years. An improved presence (over this year at least) is a must, and a dynamic recruiter like Beamer could be the answer. … Class of 2008 Charlotte (N.C.) Independence tight end Mario Carter said South Carolina and N.C. State are his top two schools.
Tennessee
Tennessee is one of the programs that is currently in the mix for two of South Florida's best for 2008. Defensive back Patrick Johnson of Pompano Beach Ely in Broward County and defensive tackle Marcus Forston from Miami Northwestern in Dade County both mentioned the Vols as being a program of interest during interviews last week. … Tennessee may be close to offering Columbia (S.C.) A.C. Flora offensive lineman Kenneth Page, the top offensive line prospect in the state of South Carolina for the class of 2008. Page already holds offers from Clemson, South Carolina, Maryland, Duke and others.
Vanderbilt
The Commodores have shown early interest in Rivals100 to watch quarterback Braden Hanson of Charlotte (N.C.) Latin. The 6-foot-6, 200-pound lefty also is getting interest from Kentucky, Clemson, North Carolina, N.C. State, Pittsburgh, Missouri, Colorado and others. … There also is some interest in Charlotte (N.C.) Independence running back Roderick Chisholm. Chisholm recently transferred to Independence High from West Charlotte.
Brian Johnson, who led Utah to an upset of Alabama in the 2009 Sugar Bowl, is ready for his first season as the Utes' offensive coordinator. At 25, the ex-QB will be the youngest with that job at the FBS level.
